It must be designed to the building code, fixed to the structure and certified by a registered structural engineer. They can be, when engineered to the National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 1170.1 for barrier loads and height, fixed to the structure, and signed off by a registered structural engineer. A decorative planter simply placed near an edge is not a compliant barrier; a planter-balustrade is specifically engineered and certified. POBOX engineers and certifies its planter-balustrades to the NCC.
In Victoria, Regulation 126 of the Building Regulations lets a registered structural engineer issue a Certificate of Compliance (Design) confirming a design — such as a planter acting as a barrier — meets the code and relevant standards. Other states have equivalent certification pathways. It's how a planter-balustrade is documented as compliant for building approval. POBOX provides this certification (Victorian Regulation 126; equivalents elsewhere).
Barrier height is set by the NCC based on the fall height and use — commonly a minimum of 1 metre (1000 mm) above the floor where there is a fall, together with requirements on non-climbable zones and gaps. Your structural engineer confirms the exact height and detail for the project. POBOX designs the planter to meet the required barrier height and detailing.
Yes. Because it performs a life-safety function, a planter acting as a barrier must be engineered for the required loads and height and certified by a registered structural engineer — in Victoria, with a Regulation 126 Certificate of Compliance. POBOX handles the engineering and certification as part of the design.
A barrier must resist the imposed actions set out in AS 1170.1 — horizontal line loads and point or infill loads that vary with the building's use, with higher loads for public or crowd areas than for a private balcony. The planter, its fixings and the supporting structure are all designed for these actions. POBOX engineers the planter and fixing to the AS 1170.1 loads for the use.
Yes — engineered aluminium planter boxes can act as a compliant barrier. The wall thickness (gauge), internal framing, full welds and the fixing to the structure are designed to carry the barrier loads while keeping weight down for rooftops and balconies. Steel or stainless can be used where higher loads or longer spans call for it. POBOX engineers each planter-balustrade to suit the use.
Planter-balustrades suit balcony and terrace edges, rooftop and podium perimeters, level changes, stairs and planter walls, and commercial and multi-residential edges where greenery and edge protection are both wanted. They're common on apartments, rooftops and premium homes. POBOX designs them for all of these.
No. Pool safety barriers are governed by separate, strict rules — such as AS 1926 and state pool-safety laws — including non-climbable zones and gap limits, and are not the same as a balcony balustrade. A planter can be integrated with a compliant pool barrier, but it does not replace certified pool fencing. POBOX will advise and design to the correct requirements for the situation.
A planter-balustrade is mechanically fixed to the slab, structure or a designed sub-frame so it can transfer barrier loads — not simply placed on the surface. The fixing detail is engineered for the substrate and the waterproofing, and set out precisely on site. POBOX engineers and certifies the fixing detail; the planter is fixed to the structure to those details — by your trade, or by our own crew on specialist installs — and it's that correct fixing the Certificate of Compliance relies on.
A planter-balustrade delivers edge protection and greenery in one element — softening a hard edge, adding privacy and planting, and hiding the barrier structure — where a glass or metal rail is purely functional. Often, yes — an existing edge can be upgraded or replaced with a planter-balustrade, subject to the structure's capacity and the waterproofing, confirmed by a site measure and engineering.
