Guide · Aluminium planters
Everything you need to know about aluminium planter boxes — why aluminium, whether they rust, how long they last, custom sizes and colours, rooftop use, cost and sustainability. Australian-made, made to measure and supplied install-ready by POBOX — fitted by your builder, landscaper or trades with our guidance, with specialist installation by our own crew where a project calls for it.
In short
POBOX Designs is an Australian designer and manufacturer of custom aluminium planter boxes, based in Ballarat and supplying install-ready Australia-wide. Aluminium planter boxes are planters fabricated from architectural aluminium sheet — laser-cut, folded, fully welded and powder-coated — used for gardens, rooftops, balconies, landscapes and commercial spaces.
They're the go-to for most projects because they're lightweight, rust-proof, finishable in any colour and made to any size — a combination steel, concrete, timber and plastic can't match.

Aluminium planter boxes are planters fabricated from architectural-grade aluminium sheet — laser-cut, folded, welded and powder-coated — used for gardens, rooftops, balconies, landscapes and commercial spaces. They're valued for being lightweight, rust-proof and finishable in any colour, and can be made to any size or shape. POBOX designs, manufactures and supplies custom aluminium planter boxes across Australia, install-ready for your trades, with specialist installation by our own crew where a project calls for it.
Aluminium planter boxes are one of the best choices for most projects because they're lightweight (about a third the weight of steel), naturally corrosion-resistant so they won't rust, powder-coated in any colour, low-maintenance and long-lived — while still being made to any size or shape. They suit rooftops and balconies with load limits, coastal and full-sun sites, and premium architectural work. More on the benefits of aluminium →
No — aluminium doesn't rust. Rust is iron oxide, and aluminium contains no iron; it instead forms a thin, stable oxide layer that resists corrosion. A quality architectural powder-coat adds a further durable, UV-stable barrier. That's why aluminium planter boxes suit coastal, poolside and full-sun Australian conditions where steel would rust. POBOX planters are powder-coated with coastal-grade options for exposed sites.
A well-made, powder-coated aluminium planter box will last decades outdoors — aluminium won't rust or rot, and an architectural powder-coat resists UV and weather. Lifespan comes down to material thickness (gauge), full welds and finish quality rather than the metal degrading. POBOX builds in 3mm architectural aluminium, fully welded with welds ground smooth and powder-coated, for a long service life.
For most planter boxes, aluminium offers the best all-round balance: far lighter than steel or concrete (ideal for rooftops and balconies), rust-proof unlike mild steel, lower-maintenance than timber (no rot or sealing), and finishable in any colour. Steel and Corten suit ground-level and heavy or structural work; concrete is heavy and fixed; timber is warm but needs upkeep. POBOX works primarily in aluminium, with steel, Corten and stainless where a project calls for it.
Aluminium conducts heat, so in full sun a planter can warm up, but this is easily managed and aluminium is no worse than — and often better than — dark plastic. A liner, adequate soil volume and mulch buffer the roots, a lighter powder-coat colour reflects heat, and good drainage prevents cooking. POBOX supplies liners and drainage detailing and can advise colour and setup for hot, exposed sites.
Yes — aluminium is ideal for custom planter boxes. Sheet is laser-cut, folded and welded, so planters can be made to any length, width, height or shape, including oversize, tapered and curved forms, then powder-coated in any colour (most Dulux, Colorbond and RAL). POBOX makes every planter to measure, matched consistently across a project.
Yes — aluminium is the go-to for rooftops and balconies because it's about a third the weight of steel, so a garden stays within the structure's load limit, and it's rust-proof for exposed, windy, high sites. Raised on adjustable feet with drainage, it protects the waterproof membrane. See our rooftop garden planter systems guide. POBOX designs and makes rooftop and balcony planters supplied install-ready Australia-wide, with rooftop and crane installs by our own crew where a project calls for it.
The cost of aluminium planter boxes depends on size, gauge, finish, quantity and whether they're standard or custom — larger, thicker, custom and one-off pieces cost more than standard sizes. Made-to-measure architectural planters are priced per project. See what drives planter box cost, or send your sizes, finish and quantity for a quote.
Yes — aluminium is highly recyclable and long-lived, which makes it a responsible choice for projects with sustainability targets. It can be recycled repeatedly using a fraction of the energy of primary production, and a durable powder-coated planter lasts for decades before that. POBOX uses architectural aluminium and builds for longevity.
